Prisma Oro: A Functional Sculpture Door Handle

Combining Artistry and Functionality in One Object

With its architectural form and descending hexagon shapes at the tip, Prisma Oro stands out as a work of art. The handle is meticulously crafted with a gold leaf finish, giving it a luxurious and captivating appearance. To bring this design to life, Valenti and Candotti employed a combination of traditional and modern production techniques. The process started with a clay prototype, followed by a plaster model. A 3D scan was then performed, and the handle was printed in resin. From there, an aluminum sand cast handle was produced, and the gold leaf finish was applied, followed by a durable and protective varnish.

The dimensions of Prisma Oro are 160 mm in width, 50 mm in depth, and 30 mm in height, making it a versatile and functional addition to any door.

The NJ Interiors Project, a collaboration between sculptor Jacopo Candotti and designer Nicole Valenti, embarked on extensive research to create this unique door handle. They explored various craft production techniques, ultimately settling on traditional sculpture techniques like sand and lost wax casting. Their research also led them to experiment with different finishes, ultimately deciding on the handmade gold leaf finish that gives Prisma Oro its distinctive appearance.

Despite the challenges faced during the research and production process, Prisma Oro has gained recognition in the design world. It has been featured in several design magazines and was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Accessories, Hardware, and Materials Design category in 2016. This prestigious award recognizes designs that exhibit technical and creative excellence while contributing to quality of life improvements.
